Bearcats Drop 64-62 Loss to Missouri Southern but Clinch Spot in MIAA Tournament

MARYVILLE, Mo. -Northwest Missouri State managed a comeback from a 14-point deficit and took the lead with 4:13 left in the game but two free throws by Missouri Southern's Dacie Reutlinger, with 27 seconds left, pushed the Lions to a 64-62 victory. Despite the loss, Northwest clinched its spot in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament (Mar. 3-6).

Northwest will go into its last week of regular season conference play with a record of 12-15 overall and 5-11 in MIAA action. Missouri Southern improved to 16-9 overall and 8-8 in conference play.

The Bearcats took their first lead at 10-9 with a 6-0 run in the first five minutes of the contest after the Lions started out strong. The 'Cats stayed close to Missouri Southern and tied the score at 19 with 6:48 left in the first 20 minutes but the Lions directly went on an 18-8 run and ended the half, 37-27.

Missouri Southern made more shots for tries than the Bearcats did in the first segment, hitting seven treys while Northwest missed all four tries from behind the arc. The 'Cats took advantage of being fouled making 11 of 14 free throws.

Northwest's eight steals in the first 15 minutes of the second half combined with its 26-10 run gave the 'Cats a 56-54 lead with less than five minutes left in the game. The Lions tied up the game three times in the last four minutes and came out on top, 64-62.

Both teams made 21-of-48 from the field (43.8 percent). The Bearcats made three of their last five three-pointers but only six of their last 14 foul shots. They had twice as many steals as the Lions (14-7) and only 19 turnovers compared to Southern's 25.

The Lions out-rebounded the Bearcats 32-29 and made 14 shots from the charity strip.

Laura Friederich recorded her third double-double on the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the 'Cats. Ashely Poptanycz also added 16 points. Vonny Wilson had the team-high 16 points for the Lions.
