'Cats Close Gap but Fall to No. 3 Washburn, 69-50
MARYVILLE, Mo. -Northwest Missouri State pulled ahead of the nationally ranked team at the start of the second half but No. 3 Washburn quickly regained the lead with a 17-2 run and won the contest, 69-50. The 'Cats scored one more point than their last meeting with Washburn while the Lady Blues scored 30 points less than their 99-49 win over Northwest on Jan. 12.
Northwest fell to 12-14 overall and 5-10 in the MIAA and Washburn improved to 23-2 overall and 13-2 in conference play.
The Lady Blues contained the lead for the entire first half extending their advantage to eight points with 4:18 left. The 'Cats then scored seven unanswered points narrowing the margin to one point and closing out the half with only a one-point deficit at 24-23.
Washburn out-rebounded Northwest 24-16 in the first segment but turned the ball over 11 times as opposed to the Bearcats' seven.
Junior Laura Friederich sank a jumper after 30 seconds in the second stanza giving the 'Cats their only lead of the game at 25-24. The Lady Blues stopped the Bearcats in their tracks with a 17-2 run. Northwest recouped to score 21 points in the remaining 11 minutes but the Lady Blues scored 28 in that time and won, 69-50.
The Bearcats ended the match with only 28 rebounds while the Lady Blues grabbed as many on defense alone (44 total). Northwest made 21 of 55 shots (38.2 percent), four of nine treys, and 4-8 from the charity stripe. It finished with more turnovers than its opponent (17-16) for only the seventh time this season.
Washburn was 27-61 from the field (44.3 percent), 6-21 from behind the arc (28.6 percent) and 9-14 from the free throw line (64.3 percent). The rebounding advantage gave the Lady Blues 11 second-chance points.
Friederich led the scoring drive with 15 points for Northwest. Ashely Poptanycz followed up with 11. Jennifer Harris and Brooke Ubelaker scored 18 points each for Washburn.
Northwest will host Missouri Southern State on Sat., Feb 19 at 1:30 p.m. The Lions defeated the Bearcats earlier this season (Jan. 8), 77-72 and have clinched their place at the MIAA Tournament.
