Northwest Women Dropped 71-78 decision to No. 5 Emporia
EMPORIA, Ks . -- Northwest Missouri State dropped its sixth loss to a nationally ranked team tonight. No. 5 Emporia State claimed the 78-71 victory despite efforts from Northwest's Laura Friederich who totaled career-high 25 points on the night, her sixth game with 20+ points.
Northwest fell to 11-12 overall and 4-8 in the MIAA as Emporia State improved to 18-3 overall and 9-3 in conference play.
Although the 'Cats were behind for the majority of the first 20 minutes, Northwest tied the game with 1:24 left in the first half at 38. Michelle Brown sunk the first of two free throws giving the Lady Hornets the 39-38 advantage going into the locker room.
Friederich scored 13 points in the first half for the Bearcats, followed by Ashely Poptanycz with 12 points. Both Bearcats pulled down five boards to contribute to the 22 total rebounds for Northwest in the first segment. The Lady Hornets rebounded only 16 missed shots. The 'Cats were 5 for 5 behind the three-point line.
The Bearcats regained the lead with a 12-1 run in the second half but fell back seven points when the Lady Hornets went on an 8-0 run with less than six minutes left. The Lady Hornets maintained at least a three-point advantage and ended the game 78-71.
Northwest shot its season-high 80 percent (8-10) from behind the three-point line, helped by Friederich and Poptanycz's 3 for 3 each from downtown. Poptanycz ended with 17 points and added nine rebounds to Friederich's nine boards. The Bearcats out-rebounded the Lady Hornets 42 to 39 but turned the ball over 18 times compared to Emporia's 10 turnovers.
Andi McAlexander had 21 points for the Lady Hornets and Casey Henningsen tallied her first double-double on the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Northwest will continue on the road next week to face Truman State on Wed., Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m. The last meeting between the Bulldogs and Bearcats was on Jan. 19 in Maryville where the 'Cats won with a 73-64 score.
