Bearcats Cruise Past Truman State, 85-68

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball team set a school record, draining 12 three-point baskets, as the Bearcats rolled past Truman State, 85-68, Wednesday night. With the win, the ‘Cats improve their record to 14-2, 7-0 in the MIAA.

Northwest jumped out early, opening the game with a 12-3 run in the first five minutes, capped by a Brooke Hogue (Sr., Albany, Mo.) three-point bucket. The Bearcats scored 13 of the next 20 points to take a commanding 25-10 lead midway through the first half.

The Bulldogs began chipping away at the Bearcat lead, and got within nine before Northwest went on yet another spurt. Back-to-back free throws capped a 12-3 run that opened up an 18-point lead for Northwest with just over four minutes remaining. The Bearcats took a 17-point lead into halftime.

The second half began with another Bearcat run. A Sarah Vollertsen (Sr., Palmyra, Neb.) jumper gave the ‘Cats a 21-point lead five minutes into the second period. Laura Friederich’s (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) fifth three-point bucket of the game extended the Bearcat lead to 25 with just under 13 minutes left in the game.

Northwest’s biggest lead of the game came with 6:09 remaining, when back-to-back free throws by Jane Chalmers (Sr., Echuca, Australia) put the ‘Cats up by 27 at 76-49. The shooting and defense of the ‘Cats proved to be too much for the Bulldogs, as Northwest cruised to the 85-68 victory.

Vollertsen led all scorers with 19 points and seven rebounds. Erica Hatterman (Sr., Lost Springs, Kan.) added 17 points, including three three-point field goals. Hogue kept her streak of 21 consecutive games with at least one three-point basket alive, as she hit four long-range buckets on her way to scoring 12 points, and Friederich added five three-point baskets and scored 15 points.
