Bearcats Survive Pitt State

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team overcame a 12-point second-half deficit en route to a 66-62 win at Pittsburg State Saturday night. With the win, the 'Cats move to 13-2 on the season, 6-0 in the MIAA.

The Gorillas jumped out to an early lead, scoring 12 of the first 14 points of the game to lead 12-2 with just under 15 minutes remaining in the half. On the next trip down the floor, Pittsburg State's Maggie Apt made a layup to give the Gorillas their biggest lead of the game at 12.

The 'Cats began to chip away at the Gorilla lead, getting as close as four on a Laura Friederich (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) layup midway through the first half. Pittsburg State used strong shooting to build the lead back to 12 with just over seven minutes remaining.

A three-point basket by Erica Hatterman (Sr., Lost Springs, Kan.) ignited a 7-2 run to close out the half that brought Northwest within seven at 36-29 heading into halftime.

The second half began with the two teams trading buckets through much of the early going. Pittsburg State once again built their lead to 12 at 45-33 with 16 minutes left to play.

The 'Cats answered with a 13-1 run, capped by a Jenna Wolfe (Sr., Clay Center, Kan.) jumper that tied the game at 46-46 with just over 11 minutes remaining. The two teams continued to battle, and with the scored tied at 50-50, a 14-4 Bearcat run put Northwest up by 10 with five minutes to play.

The Gorillas had one last comeback left in them, as an 8-0 made it a two-point lead for the 'Cats with one minute left on the clock. Ashley Freerksen (Fr., West Des Moines, Iowa) drained back-to-back free throws with one second left to propel the 'Cats to the 66-62 victory.

Jane Chalmers (Sr., Echuca, Australia) and Ashley Poptanycz (Jr., Westboro, Mo.) paced the 'Cats with 12 points each. Chalmers also added six assists and three steals, while Poptanycz chipped in with eight rebounds and five steals. Friederich chipped in with 11 points and four boards.
