'Cats Upset No. 8 Washburn, 67-59
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Three Bearcats scored in double-figures, as the Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team upset the No. 8 Washburn Lady Blues, 67-59, Wednesday night at Bearcat Arena. With the win, the 'Cats move to 12-2 on the season and remain a perfect 5-0 in the MIAA.
Washburn got on the board first, draining back-to-back free throws, but the 'Cats answered back with a layup by Sarah Vollertsen (Palmyra, Neb.). Washburn took a four-point lead, but with 15:11 remaining in the first half, Ashely Poptanycz (Jr., Westboro, Mo.) scored to put the Bearcats in front for good.
Over the next 10 minutes, the 'Cats used a 22-9 run to extend their lead to 15 points. Northwest used strong free-throw shooting the rest of the first half to take a 37-20 lead into halftime.
The Bearcats came out strong in the first half and continued to build their lead. A three-point basket by Brooke Hogue (Sr., Albany, Mo.) gave Northwest its biggest lead of the game at 18 five minutes into the second half.
The Lady Blues mounted a comeback, but where unable to get any closer than five. In the final five minutes, Northwest hit 10 of 14 free throws en route to the 67-59 victory.
Hogue led the 'Cats with 13 points, while Poptanycz and Erica Hatterman (Sr., Lost Springs, Kan.) joined her in double-figures with 12 and 10 respectively.
The Bearcats will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 17, traveling to Pittsburg, Kan., to face the Pittsburg State Gorillas. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
