Bearcats Outlast Missouri Southern

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team defeated Missouri Southern, 70-51, Saturday afternoon in Bearcat Arena to remain undefeated in MIAA play. With the win, the 'Cats move to 11-2 on the season.

The game remained close throughout much of the first half, with neither team leading by more than five points during the first 20 minutes of play. Sarah Vollertsen (Sr., Palmyra, Neb.) scored the Bearcats' first seven points in the first five minutes of the game. The Lions used hot shooting early to pull out to a five-point lead with just over 11 minutes left in the half.

Northwest continued to battle, and a jumper by Laura Friederich (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) gave Northwest its first lead of the game at 21-20 with just over five minutes remaining. The Lions came back, using strong shooting to take a 28-27 lead into halftime.

The Bearcats came out hot in the second half. With 16:38 remaining in the game, Vollertsen hit a jumper that put the 'Cats in the lead for good. Vollertsen's jumper ignited a 16-2 run, which included Northwest's first three-pointer of the day by Ashely Poptanycz (Jr., Westboro, Mo.), giving the Bearcats a 15-point lead with 11 minutes remaining.

The Lions continued to battle, but the Northwest defense proved to be too much. The 'Cats forced 28 turnovers on the day, with 10 of those coming in the second half.

A three-pointer by Brooke Hogue (Sr., Albany, Mo.) gave the Bearcats a 17-point lead with just over four minutes left in the game. Jane Chalmers (Sr., Echua, Australia) sank two free throws with under a minute left to give Northwest its biggest lead at 19.

Vollertsen led the 'Cats with her second consecutive double-double. She notched a career-high tying 23 points and 10 boards, while Poptanycz added 18 points and five boards.

Northwest will be back in action Wednesday, Jan. 14, hosting nationally ranked Washburn. Tipoff at Bearcat Arena is slated for 5:30 p.m.
