Bearcats Defeat Missouri-Rolla, 64-47

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Senior Sarah Vollertsen tied the Northwest record for career blocked shots with the 83rd block of her career and notched her third double-double of the season, as the Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team defeated Missouri-Rolla, 64-47, Saturday afternoon in Bearcat Arena. With the win, the 'Cats move to 9-2 on the season, 2-0 in conference play.

The Bearcats, who never trailed in the game, came out strong, jumping out to an 11-4 lead on a jumper by Vollertsen just four minutes into the game. Northwest used strong defense to continue to build their lead. The 'Cats forced 14 turnovers in the first half, which led to 10 Bearcat points. Another Vollertsen basket gave Northwest it's largest lead of the half at 12 points midway through the first half.

The Lady Miners battled and cut the lead to three on a layup by Andrea Durante with six and a half minutes left. However, solid free-throw shooting by the Bearcats stretched the lead back to nine points with just over four minutes to play. A layup by Rolla's Gail Gerstenecker sent the game into halftime with the Bearcats leading 32-27.

Missouri-Rolla came out determined in the second half and cut the lead to three with 17 minutes left in the game. It was as close as the Lady Miners got for the rest of the game. A 12-5 over the next 10 minutes, capped by a Laura Friederich (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) three-pointer, stretched the Bearcat lead to 10. Northwest continued to build its lead. An old-fashioned three-point play by Jenna Wolfe (Sr., Clay Center, Kan.) with just under a minute left in the game, gave the Bearcats their largest lead of the game at 18, and the 'Cats went on to the 64-47 victory.

Vollertsen led the 'Cats with 10 points, 11 boards and two blocked shots. Wolfe added 12 points, while Brooke Hogue (Sr., Albany, Mo.) and Ashley Freerksen (Fresh., West Des Moines, Iowa) added nine points each.

Northwest will be back in action Wednesday, Jan. 7, traveling to St. Joseph, Mo., to take on rival Missouri Western. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
