Northwest Gets Past Jennies, 65-58
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team advanced to the second round of the MIAA Tournament by defeating Central Missouri State, 65-58, Thursday night at Municipal Auditorium.
The 'Cats jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, with Sarah Vollertsen (Sr., Palmyra, Neb.) scoring the first four points for the Bearcats. Central fought back, though, and tied the game at 8-8 on a three-point jumper by Meagan Frohm with just over 13 minutes left in the half.
The Jennies hung close, but a 14-7 run midway through the first half put Northwest up by seven around the seven minute mark. After the 'Cats jumped out to a nine-point lead, Central Missouri started its comeback. A jumper by Ashley Millham sparked an 8-2 run that brought the Jennies to within one and sent the two teams into halftime with Northwest leading, 33-32.
The second half started off solid for the Bearcats, as they rebuilt their lead to eight on back-to-back free throws by Vollertsen just two minutes in. The Jennies answered with an 11-4 run, which closed the gap to one with 11:57 remaining in the game.
A bucket by Laura Friederich (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) sparked a 15-5 run that put Northwest back out in front by 11 with just under six minutes left to play. However, Central refused to go quietly, and a jumper by Millham cut the Bearcat lead to four with 1:13 remaining in the game, but the 'Cats would not surrender their lead. A steal by Erica Hatterman (Sr., Lost Springs, Kan.) sealed the 65-58 win for the 'Cats.
Vollertsen led all scorers with 20 points and 14 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Hatterman poured in 13 points, while Jane Chalmers (Sr., Echuca, Australia) added 12. Ashely Poptanycz chipped in with 12 rebounds.
The 'Cats advance to the second round to face the Washburn Lady Blues, who defeated Pittsburg State earlier on Thursday. The Bearcats and Lady Blues split the regular season series, with each team winning on its home court.
