No. 17 Bearcats Fall at Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team fell, 60-59, to the Missouri Southern Lions on a last-second shot Saturday in Joplin. The 'Cats now stand at 19-6, 12-4 in the MIAA.

The game got off to a quick start, as the Bearcats jumped out to an early lead. A three-point field-goal by Laura Friederich (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) gave Northwest an 11-4 lead just over six minutes into the game.

Missouri Southern fought back to get within three before jumpers by Sarah Vollertsen (Sr., Palmyra, Neb.) and Jenna Wolfe (Sr., Clay Center, Kan.) put the 'Cats back up by seven at the midway point of the first half. The Lions once again battled back and got to within two with 30 seconds left in the first half, but a layup by Vollertsen sent Northwest into the locker room with a four-point advantage.

Southern came out hot in the second half, tying the game at 33-33 four minutes in. A quick burst by the Lions followed, and with 13:29 left in the game, Southern held a five-point lead. The 'Cats battled back and tied the game at 43-43 on two free throws by Vollertsen.

The game remined close the rest of the way with neither team leading by more than three and the score being tied three times. With Northwest trailing 58-57 with 40 second left to play, the 'Cats once again turned to Vollertsen and the strong inside game. A short jumper by Vollertsen put Northwest in front, 59-58, with 22 seconds remaining.

Following a time out, the Lions inbounded the ball and turned to the league's second-leading scorer, Aburie Hallman. With just over one second left in the game, Hallman scored two of her four points to give Southern the 60-59 victory.

Northwest was led by Friederich, who poured in 16 points, including four three-point field goals. Volletsen added 12 points and six boards, and Erica Hatterman (Sr., Lost Springs, Kan.) chipped in with nine points.
