No. 17 Bearcats Fall at No. 13 Washburn
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 17 Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team fell, 66-57, at No. 13 Washburn Wednesday night. The 'Cats are now 19-5 on the season, 12-3 in the MIAA.
Northwest jumped out an early 6-0 lead, using strong play in the paint. Washburn battled back to take a two-point lead with 14:28 left in the first half. The two teams continued to battle throughout the first stanza, with neither team leading by more than four points. The 'Cats took a 26-25 lead into halftime.
Northwest came out strong in the second half, extending its lead to three on a bucket by Sarah Vollertsen (Sr., Palmyra, Neb.). However, Washburn refused to go away.
On three consecutive trips down the floor, the Lady Blues drained three-point buckets to tie the game on 35-35 with 15:05 remaining in the game. Following a timeout, the Lady Blues went on a 10-0 run in less than three minutes to extend their lead to 45-35.
Northwest continued to fight, and a layup by Vollertsen brought the 'Cats to within four with just under six minutes left to play. It was as close as the Bearcats would get, as Washburn extended their lead back to eight with 4:10 remaining en route to the 66-57 victory.
The 'Cats were led by Erica Hatterman (Sr., Lost Springs, Kan.), who poured in 16 points and grabbed six boards. Vollertsen added 14 points and five boards, while Jane Chalmers chipped in with eight points to go along with seven assists.
