MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The No. 19 Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team defeated Pittsburg State, 76-54, Saturday night in Bearcat Arena. The 'Cats now stand at 19-4 overall, 12-2 in the MIAA.
Northwest got off to a quick start, with Sarah Vollertsen (Sr., Palmyra, Neb.) and Erica Hatterman (Sr., Lost Springs, Kan.) accounting for the Bearcats' first 13 points. However, the Bearcat defense was the story of the first half.
The 'Cats held Pittsburg State scoreless for the first seven and a half minutes of the game. The Gorillas' first basket came on a jumper by Stephanie Shanline at the 12:34 mark. At the midway point of the first half, the Bearcats held a 19-4 lead.
In the first half, a stiff 'Cat defense held Pittsburg State to just 23 points and 25 percent shooting from the floor. Northwest also forced 16 turnovers, which led to 13 Bearcat points.
Hatterman got the 'Cats going again in the second half, draining a three on the Bearcats' first possession of the second stanza. Northwest continued to build its lead, using a 9-2 run to open up a 20-point advantage.
The Northwest lead reached its largest at the 11:59 mark, when a layup by Laura Friederich (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) put the 'Cats up by 25. The Gorillas continued to battle but could not get any closer than 18, as the Bearcats cruised to the 76-54 win.
