No. 19 Northwest Rolls Past Truman State
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The No. 19 Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team bounced back with a 89-61 win over Truman State Wednesday night at Bearcat Arena. The 'Cats now stand at 18-4 on the season, 11-2 in the MIAA.
A bucket by Brooke Hogue (Sr., Albany, Mo.) a minute and a half into the game got the 'Cats going. Northwest opened the game with an 11-5 run in the first five minutes to open up a lead they would not relinquish.
A three-point field goal by Laura Friederich (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) put the Bearcats in front 21-14 at the midway point of the first half. Northwest continued to build its lead over the next 10 minutes, using a 17-11 run to build a 13-point lead with just over a minute remaining. The 'Cats took a 10-point advantage into halftime.
The second half saw a determined Bearcat defense come out and hold Truman State scoreless for the first four minutes and 14 seconds, while scoring six points to build a 16-point lead. The Northwest lead continued to grow and reached 20 on back-to-back free throws by Friederich with 13:33 left in the game.
Over the next 10 minutes, Northwest outscored the Bulldogs 21-11 to extend the lead to 30 with just under five minutes showing on the clock. Northwest's largest lead came just a few second later, when two free throws by Jenna Wolfe (Sr., Clay Center, Kan.) extended the margin to 32, and the 'Cats cruised to the 89-61 win.
Jane Chalmers (Sr., Echuca, Australia) led the team with a game-high 18 points and nine assists to go along with five rebounds. Friederich hit double-digit scoring for the fifth straight game, notching 17 points, and Sarah Vollertsen (Sr., Palmyra, Neb.) added 14 points and seven boards.
