No. 17 Northwest Falls at No. 2 Emporia State
EMPORIA, Kan. -- The No. 17 Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team fell to No. 2 Emporia State, 96-75, Saturday night in Emporia. The 'Cats are now 17-4 overall, 10-2 in the MIAA.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to an early 8-0 lead before Northwest got on the board on a Sarah Vollertsen (Sr., Palmyra, Neb.) layup three minutes into the game. Northwest struggled from the field, while Emporia shot the ball well on their home floor. At the midway point of the first half, the Hornets lead 24-11.
A bucket by Laura Friederich (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) brouth the 'Cats within 11 with 9:51 remaining. It was the closest Northwest would get the rest of the game. Emporia led by as many as 25 in the first half and took a 46-26 lead into halftime.
The 'Cats came out of intermission strong, cutting the Hornet lead to 14 on a basket by Erica Hatterman (Sr., Lost Springs, Kan.) with 16:54 remaining in the game. Northwest continued to battle back, and got to withint 12 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Vollertsen at the 12:27 mark.
Emporia answered, extending their lead back to 22 with just over four minutes left en route to the 21-point win.
The 'Cats were led by Ashely Poptanycz (Jr., Westboro, Mo.) with 14 points and seven boards. Jane Chalmers (Sr., Echuca, Australia) chipped in with 13 points, and Friederich added 11 points and five boards.
