No. 17 Northwest Cruises at Central
WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team improved to 10-1 in conference play and 17-3 overall with an easy, 77-52, victory at Central Missouri State Wednesday night.
The game got off to a slow start, with neither team able to score until over two and half minutes into the game. The Bearcats got on the board first with a Brooke Hogue (Sr., Albany, Mo.) three-point field goal. The Jennies answered on the next trip down the floor with a three of their own to tie the score.
With the score tied 7-7 around the 15-minute mark, Northwest began to pull away. A 17-3 run over the next 10 minutes gave the 'Cats a 14-point lead, and they never looked back.
Hot shooting and stingy defense gave Northwest a 21-point halftime lead. In the first 20 minutes of play, the Bearcats forced the Jennies into 22 turnovers, which had been Central previous game-high for turnovers.
The second half went much as the first, with the 'Cats opening up the stanza with a 9-4 run to extend the lead to 49-25 with 15 minutes left in the game. Northwest enjoyed its biggest lead of the game at 31 points 8:37 mark on a jumper by Hogue Central never got closer than 24, as the 'Cats cruised to the 77-52 win.
The 'Cats were led by Ashely Poptanycz (Jr., Westboro, Mo.) with a game-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds. Laura Friederich (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) poured in 12 points, while Sarah Vollertsen (Sr., Palmyra, Neb.), Erica Hatterman (Sr., Lost Springs, Kan.) and Hogue added 10 points each
