Bearcats Roll Past Lady Hawks, 92-47
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Four Bearcats scored in double figures and Sarah Vollertsen (Sr., Palmyra, Neb.) set a school record with eight blocks, as the Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team wrapped up its non-conference season with a 92-47 win at Rockhurst Wednesday night. The 'Cats never trailed and head into conference play with a 7-2 record.
The 'Cats jumped out to an early 9-0 lead on a layup by Vollertsen just three minutes into the game. Northwest continued shooting the ball well, building a 28-point lead on a bucket by Erica Hatterman (Sr., Lost Springs, Kan.) with just over seven minutes left in the first half. A jumper by Jenna Wolfe (Sr., Clay Center, Kan.) with two minutes to play gave the Bearcats their biggest lead of the half at 29 points. Northwest took a 47-19 lead into the locker room.
An 11-5 run to open the second half gave Northwest a 35-point lead with 15 minutes left in the game. The Lady Hawks could not get their offense or defense going as the 'Cats continued to build their lead. Another Hatterman bucket gave the Bearcats their largest lead of the night at 50 points with just under five minutes left. Northwest went on to the 92-47 victory over Rockhurst.
The 'Cats were led by Vollertsen with 14 points, seven rebounds and eight blocked shots. Wolfe added 12 points, three blocks and three steals. Tanesha Fields (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Ashley Freerksen (Fresh., West Des Moines, Iowa) also scored in double-figures for the Bearcats. Fields notched 11 points, while Freerksen scored 10.
The 'Cats will be back in action, opening MIAA play against Missouri-Rolla on Dec. 30. Tipoff in Bearcat Arena is set for 5:30 p.m.
