Augustana Comes Back, Tops Bearcats 85-82
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team dropped an 85-82 deicision to the Augustana College Vikings Saturday night at the Elmond Center. The Bearcats drop to 6-2 overall with the loss.
Northwest led 78-69 with 3:47 remaining in the game, when Ashley Freerksen (Fr., Des Moines, Iowa) hit a pair of free throws. The two charity tosses gave Northwest its biggest lead of the game at that point. But Augustana held Northwest scoreless for the next two minutes.
The Vikings used that scoreless stretch to put together a 10-0 run. Augustana took the lead 79-78 with 2:18 remaining on an Erin Johnson layup. Laura Hensley's three-pointer was the big blow during the 10-point spurt.
Northwest regained the lead, 80-79. Jane Chalmers (Sr., Echuca, Australia) went coast-to-coast for a layup with 1:34 left in the contest. Augie took the lead again on a Katie Krauth bucket. A pair of Ashely Poptanycz (Jr., Westboro, Mo.) free throws put the 'Cats up 82-81 with 20 seconds left. The Vikings' Joanna Naumann hit a jumper with 0:07 on the clock. Freerksen's three-pointer from the right corner was off the mark with three seconds left.
Naumann hit two free throws for Augustana to account for the final margin. Laura Friederich (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) had a 30-footer at the buzzer, which failed to draw iron.
Krauth scored a career-high 31 points for Augustana, hitting six three-pointers. Naumann had 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Vikings. Northwest was paced by Brooke Hogue's 19-point effort. Friederich added 15 and Freerksen scored 12. Poptanycz pulled down a team-high 12 boards for the 'Cats.
