'Cats Bury Mustangs, 104-71

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- For the second time this season, the Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team scored in triple digits, downing Mt. Mercy, 104-71, Saturday afternoon in Bearcat Arena. Three Bearcats scored in double-digits, as the team improved to 6-1 on the season.

The 'Cats got off to a quick start, scoring on an Ashely Poptanycz (Jr., Westobor, Mo.) layup just four seconds into the game. The Bearcats never trailed, stretching their first-half lead to eight on three consecutive three-point baskets by Brooke Hogue (Sr., Albany, Mo.), Jenna Wolfe (Sr., Clay Center, Kan.) and Laura Friederich (Soph., Overland Park, Kan.) with 15 minutes left in the half.

Northwest continued its hot shooting, sinking 22 of 46 attempts in the first half for a shooting percentage of 47.8. The 'Cats grabbed their largest lead of the first half with a minute and a half to play. A free throw by Ashley Freerksen (Fr., West Des Moines, Iowa) put Northwest in front by 25. The 'Cats took a 24-point advantage into halftime.

The 'Cats continued to build their lead in the second half, stretching their advantage to 36 on a layup by Katie Scherer (Sr., Centerview, Mo.) with 13 minutes left to play. Mt. Mercy got to within 27 with just over seven minutes left to play, but the 'Cats built the lead back to 37 on two free throws by Poptanycz with four and a half minutes left. Northwest topped the century mark on two free throws by Scherer with just over two minutes left to play, going on to the 104-71 victory.

Freerksen led the 'Cats with a career-high 19 points. She also added five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Poptanycz notched her fourth double-double of the season, recording 16 points and 11 boards to go along with two blocked shots and three steals. Friederich added 10 points and five boards.

The 'Cats will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 13, as they travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., to face Augustana at 7 p.m.
