Bearcats Hit Century Mark in Win Over St. Scholastica
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Six Bearcats scored in double-figures, as the Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team defeated St. Scholastica, 100-57, Saturday at the Bemidji State Tournament. With the win, the 'Cats move to 4-1 on the season.
The Bearcats came out of the gate shooting, jumping out to an early 19-6 lead just five minutes into the game. Brooke Hogue (Sr., Albany, Mo.) accounted for nine of those points, hitting three three-point baskets. Northwest continued its hot shooting, stretching its lead to as many as 38 on two free-throws by Katie Scherer (Sr., Centerview, Mo.) with three minutes left in the half. The 'Cats went to the locker room with a 59-29 lead.
The second half began much the same as the first, with the Bearcats using a 25-12 run. A jumper by Ashley Freerksen (Fresh., W. Des Moines, Iowa) gave the 'Cats an 84-41 lead with just under 10 minutes to play. St. Scholastica could not break the stiff Bearcat defense and were never able to get any closer than 37. Northwest hit the century mark on a jump shot by Ashely Poptanycz (Jr., Westboro, Mo.) 47 seconds left in the game.
The 'Cats were left by Sarah Vollertsen (Sr., Palmyra, Neb.), who notched the eighth double-double of her career with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Poptanycz added 14 points and Freerksen finished with 13 points. Jenna Wolfe (Sr., Clay Center, Kan.) chipped in with 11 points and Scherer and Hogue had 10 points each.
