'Cats Fall to No. 6 North Dakota
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to No. 6 North Dakota Friday afternoon at the Bemidji State Tournament. The 'Cats now stand at 3-1 on the season.
Shooting woes plagued both teams during the first half, with neither team shooting over 40 percent during the first 20 minutes of play. North Dakota opened up a seven-point advantage on a three-point field goal by Marisa Leighton with just over 15 minutes left in the half. A free throw by the Bearcats' Laura Friederich (Overland Park, Kan.) marked the last basket scored by either team in almost a four-minute span. A three-pointer by Jenna Wolfe (Clay Center, Kan.) broke the drought and brought the 'Cats to within three. Back-to-back baskets by Erica Hatterman (Lost Springs, Kan.) and Tanesha Fields (Overland Park, Kan.) gave the Bearcats a one-point lead midway through the first half. The Fighting Sioux answered with a 10-2 run to give themselves a seven-point lead. That lead was stretched to as many as nine, but the 'Cats refused to go away. The game was tied at 32 heading into halftime.
The 'Cats opened the second half with a 7-2 run to take a five-point lead. The Fighting Sioux fought back to tie the game, and the two teams continued to trade baskets through much of the second half. However, a 25-15 run midway through the second half gave North Dakota an 11-point advantage. The Bearcats continued to battle but were unable to get any closer than nine, falling by 13 points, 76-63.
The Bearcats were led by senior Sarah Vollertsen (Palmyra, Neb.) with 20 points and six rebounds. Friederich finished with 15 points and six boards, and senior Brooke Hogue (Albany, Mo.) chipped in with 10 points.
Northwest will be back in action Saturday at 1 p.m., taking on St. Scholastica in the Bemidji State Tournament.
