Bearcats Down St. Mary's
MARYVILLE , Mo. - Junior Ashely Poptanycz (Westboro, Mo.) recorded her third consecutive double-double, as the 'Cats defeated St. Mary's, 80-62, Wednesday night in Bearcat Arena. Two other players scored in double-figures, as the Bearcats move to 3-0 on the season.
Poor shooting plagued the 'Cats through much of the early going. St. Mary's took advantage and jumped out to an early lead. With just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, a three-point basket by Nicole Brantley gave the Saints their biggest lead of the game at 10. Following that basket, the Bearcats began their comback. A layup by Sarah Vollertsen (Palmyra, Neb.) tied the game at 26 with just over four minutes to play in the half. Northwest closed out the first half with a 11-4 run to take a 39-30 lead into halftime.
The 'Cats came out hot in the second half, using a 12-2 run to open up a 16-point lead with around 15 minutes left. The 'Cats continued to shoot well, but the Saints would not go quietly. Midway through the second half, St. Mary's closed the gap to seven but were unable to get any closer. A 23-12 run to close out the game gave the Bearcats the 80-62 victory.
Poptanycz led the way with 20 points and 12 boards for her third career double-double. Vollertsen had 16 points, while senior Jane Chalmers (Echuca, Australia) added 12 points, six assists and six rebounds. Sophomore Laura Friederich (Overland Park, Kan.) chipped in with eight boards.
The 'Cats hit the road for the first time this weekend, traveling to Bemidji, Minn., to participate in the Bemidji State Tournament. Friday, the Bearcats face No. 6 North Dakota and will then take on St. Scholastica on Saturday.
