Bearcats Record Big Win Over Avila

MARYVILLE , Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team wrapped up the 2003 Ryland Milner Classic with an 84-43 win over Avila Saturday night in Bearcat Arena. Laura Friederich (Overland Park, Kan.) and Sarah Vollertsen (Palmyra, Neb.) were named to the all-tournament team, and Ashely Poptanycz (Westboro, Mo.) was named the tournament's most valuable player.

The Bearcats dominated the entire second half, holding Avila to stretches of six and seven minutes without scoring. Northwest used a 27-8 run to open the second half, which gave the 'Cats a 32-point lead with just over 11 minutes left in the game. Lauren McCarthy sank a bucket for the Eagle, ending a nearly seven-minute scoring drought for Avila. A jumper by senior Jenna Wolfe (Clay Center, Kan.) gave Northwest its biggest lead of the game at 48 points with just under four minutes left in the game.

Both teams struggled from the floor during the first 20 minutes play, but the Bearcats were able to build a 10-point lead on a bucket by Wolfe midway through the first half. The Eagles were unable to get any closer than four points against a stingy Bearcat defense. The 'Cats took an 11-point lead into halftime.

Poptanycz recorded her second consecutive double-double, tallying 10 points and 11 rebounds to earn MVP honors. Vollertsen also notched a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Friederich added 12 points. Also scoring in double-digits for the 'Cats was freshman Ashley Freerksen (West Des Moines, Iowa), chipping in 10 points in the Bearcat win.

The Bearcats will be back in action Wednesday, Nov. 26, taking on St. Mary's in Bearcat Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
