
MARYVILLE , Mo. - Sophomore Laura Friederich (Overland Park, Kan.) scored 24 points and junior Ashely Poptanycz (Westboro, Mo.) notched a double-double in the Bearcats 92-70 season-opening win over Bemidji State Friday night in Bearcat Arena.
The 'Cats never trailed in the game, jumping out to an early 19-6 lead. The Beavers battled back to get within three points with just under three minutes left in the first period, but the Bearcats headed into halftime with a seven-point lead.
Northwest used a 18-8 run to open up a 20-point lead with 15 minutes left in the game. The Bearcats shot 44 percent during the second half to pull away for the 22-point victory.
To go along with her 24 points, Friederich also chipped in seven rebounds. Poptanycz scored 15 points and pulled down 11 boards for her first career double-double, while senior Brooke Hogue (Albany, Mo.) added 15 points. Also scoring in double-figures for the 'Cats was senior Erica Hatterman (Lost Springs, Kan.) with 11 points. Hatterman also had six rebounds.
The 'Cats (1-0) will be back in action Saturday night, taking on Avila University in the final night of the Ryland Milner Classic. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
