Bearcats Down Goldstar in Exhibition
MARYVILLE , Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team opened the 2003-04 season with an 87-72 win in an exhibition game against Goldstar Sunday afternoon in Bearcat Arena.
The 'Cats jumped out to an early lead thanks to strong shooting from the outside and good post play under the basket. Northwest built an early 11-point lead before Goldstar began the comeback. An 9-0 run by the visitors made it a two-point game. Goldstar continued to play well, taking a six-point lead with just under four minutes to play in the first half. The 'Cats continued to battle, tying the game at 40 heading into halftime.
The second half began with the two teams trading baskets for much of the early going. A 13-5 run, capped off by a three-point basket from Ashely Poptancyz (Westboro, Mo.), with just under eight minutes left in the game gave the 'Cats and eight-point advantage. Goldstar continued to battle, using hot shooting from the outside to close the gap to one-point with four minutes left, but the Bearcats were not going to be denied in their season debut. Northwest finished the game with a 14-2 run to go on to the 87-72 victory.
Senior Sarah Vollertsen (Palmyra, Neb.) notched a double-double, with 16 points and 10 boards to lead the way for Northwest. Erica Hatterman (Lost Springs, Kan.) added 15 points, while Laura Friederich (Overland Park, Kan.) and Poptanycz chipped in with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
