Northwest Missouri State head volleyball coach Anna Tool begins her second season at the helm of the Bearcats. Tool completed her first year at Northwest with a 14-19 record, earning the most wins by an inaugural volleyball coach at Northwest since 1987. She also led the Bearcats to their first MIAA tournament appearance since the event’s inception in 2003.
Tool graduated from the University of Minnesota Morris in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She was a four-year letterwinner in both volleyball and basketball for the Cougars and earned All-NSIC honors twice for each sport. She left the volleyball program as the school’s all-time leader for career attack percentage and single-game attacks.
Tool served as a graduate assistant volleyball coach at South Dakota State in 1999 and 2000, where she graduated with a Master of Science Degree in sport pedagogy with an emphasis on athletic administration.
In 1999, Tool assisted in coaching North Central Conference (NCC) Freshman of the Year Angie Rime. Overseeing the team’s academics, South Dakota State received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Award with a 3.41 team GPA.
In 2000, the Jackrabbits won the NCC regular season championship, competed in the NCAA regional finals and ended the season with a No. 4 national ranking. Tool was instrumental in coaching the school’s first All-Americans in Rose Ebnet and Shauna Sturm.
Tool then headed to Division I North Carolina State, where she served as an assistant from 2001-03. Tool’s responsibilities included recruiting, team travel,and game management coordination.
Her first head coaching gig came the following season at Division III Virginia Wesleyan. Tool coached the Marlins to two 19-win seasons and two semifinals appearances in the Old Dominion Conference tournament. She also served as the school’s assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach in 2004.
Tool teaches classes at Northwest in officiating volleyball and the fundamentals of coaching volleyball. She is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Tool and her husband, Ryan, reside in Maryville with their son, Carter (4 years), and daughter, Taylor (1 year).

Former Bearcat volleyball and track athlete Steph Martin is beginning her second season as an assistant coach for the Northwest volleyball program. Martin will be involved in all facets of the volleyball program from practice planning to recruiting. She will assist in evaluating prospects, corresponding with them and coordinating campus visits.
Martin was previously the head volleyball coach for Maryville High School while completing work for a Master of Science degree in athletic administration at Northwest. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business/finance in 2004.
Martin ended her volleyball career at Northwest fourth all-time in career block assists per game and seventh in total blocks per game. She served as captain of the Bearcats in 2004, earned All-MIAA honorable mention honors and was named to the Academic All-MIAA team.
On the track, Martin was the 2004 MIAA champion in the indoor 800-meter run and placed 10th in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Prior to Northwest, Martin spent two seasons playing for Iowa State University where she led the Cyclones in attack percentage. As a sophomore, Martin also finished second on the team in blocks and fifth in kills.
Steph and her husband, Tyler, reside in Maryville. Tyler is currently serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Northwest football team.
