Volleyball Begins Weekend Tournament with WinTournament Central | Box Score
JOPLIN, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team beat Southeastern Oklahoma, 3-1, on the opening day of the Missouri Southern Tournament at Laggett and Platt Athletics Center in Joplin, Mo., on Friday afternoon. The win moves Northwest to an even 8-8 on the season while Southeastern Oklahoma drops to 7-8 overall.
In the first set, the Bearcats jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, winning 25-20. The Savage Storm rebounded with a 25-21 victory in the second set, evening the count heading into the break. In the third set, Northwest got out to a quick start but the Storm fought back, nearly pulling even at 14-13. The Bearcats would take 11 of the next 16 points to win the set, 25-18. After Northwest built an eight-point lead on match point in the fourth set, 24-16, the Storm fought back and eventually brought the score to within two, 24-22. After a quick timeout, Northwest regrouped and closed out the match on a Shelby Duren kill.
Brooke Bartosh had a team-high 11 kills to go along with two blocks. Abby Graves had 10 kills. Bridget Hanafin had 43 assists, seven kills, seven digs and a block. Bailey Vance had a game-high 24 digs defensively and recorded two service aces. Aarika Wittenburg , who had a game-best three service aces, added 12 digs and Duren had 11 to go along with six kills.
Northwest will play two matches tomorrow to conclude the tournament. The Bearcats will face Harding at 11 a.m. followed by a game against Southwestern Oklahoma State at 1 p.m.
