Bearcats split at Lady Blues Classic
TOPEKA, Kan. – The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team knocked off East Central Saturday morning before falling to Harding in the nightcap to finish 2-2 on the weekend at the Lady Blues Fall Classic.
The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead against the Tigers in their first match Saturday and before rolling to a 25-17, 25-15, 25-8 victory in the tournament’s first game.
Northwest got double digit kills from Abby Graves and Brooke Bartosh as the duo blasted 10 kills each. The pair also hit over .300 as the Bearcats put together one of their best performances in the fourth set hitting .429 as a team.
Dallas Gardner continued to pace the offense with 21 assists while Tori Beckman steadied the defense with 14 digs.
The nightcap was less friendly to the Bearcats as they fell behind early and despite a late rally could never recover falling 25-20, 25-12, 20-25, 25-22 to Harding.
A trio of Bearcats was solid offensively as Whitney Mason and Shelby Duren each tallied 15 kills. Duren recorded a double-double in the loss adding 20 digs.
A strong defensive effort from a Harding team that recorded 10 blocks held Northwest at bay in the loss.
Freshman setter, Dallas Gardner, was also named to the All-Tournament Team as the lone Bearcat representative.
The Bearcats return to MIAA play on Wednesday as they travel to Central Missouri to take on the 7th-ranked Jennies. Northwest will return home Friday as they host Central Oklahoma in a 7 p.m. match from Bearcat Arena.
