No. 3 Washburn sneaks by Bearcats
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Washburn Lady Blues, ranked third in the nation, held off the Northwest Missouri State volleyball team in a rare nonconference game between league foes Tuesday, with a 3-1 victory.
The Bearcats (8-5, 4-0) started strong in the first set, but Washburn (13-0, 4-0) regrouped going into the second set and took the win 25-27, 25-16, 25-16, 25-17.
Jessica Fey led the Washburn offense with 15 kills and an attack percentage of .393. Fey was ranked second in the MIAA in attack percentage going into Tuesday’s game.
The Bearcats made 29 errors in the game, and struggled to make up the difference. Washburn played tough defense with eight blocks as team to capitalize on the errors committed by Northwest. Washburn’s Kelsey Lewis had four block assists.
Abby Graves led the Bearcat offense with 12 kills in the loss.
Brooke Bartosh, ranked second in the MIAA for kills, finished with 10.
Tori Beckman led the Bearcat defense with 17 digs in the game. Beckman leads the team with 253 digs this season.
The Bearcat’s return to conference competition against Southwest Baptist (4-9, 0-3) Friday at Bearcat Arena before hitting the road to face rival Truman State (10-4, 3-2). First serve Friday is set for 7 p.m.
