Volleyball begins MIAA play at Missouri Western

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Both Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western volleyball teams participated in University of Missouri Science and Technology's "Middle of Everywhere" tournament this past weekend. Tuesday the teams begin their MIAA conference seasons at MWSU Fieldhouse in St. Joseph, Mo. at 7 p.m.

Missouri Western's junior setter, Stephanie Hattey, was named the MIAA Specialistof the week. Her 82 assists from the weekend in Rolla, Mo. were enough to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Bearcat sophomore Brooke Bartosh was also named to the all-tournament team.

Northwest Missouri State (4-4) and Missouri Western (6-2) both lost to No. 3 Southwest Minnesota State at the tournament. Both teams also played Upper Iowa. Northwest defeated Upper Iowa 25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 28-26. Upper Iowa however knocked off the Griffons 26-24, 25-16, 25-23.

The last time Northwest won a conference match in St. Joseph, Mo. was in 2008 as the Griffons lead the all-time series against the Bearcats at 63-27.

Northwest is led by Brooke Bartosh with 86 kills. Freshman Dallas Gardner leads the Bearcats offensively with 181 assists. Senior Tori Beckman leads the Bearcat defense with 154 digs.
