'Cats cap 2011 season with win
JOPLIN, Mo.- The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team finished their 2011 season with a 3-0 routing over Missouri Southern Saturday night.
The Lions (5-25, 3-15 MIAA) could never swing momentum in their favor as the Bearcat showed their killer instinct rallying for a, 25-16, 25-22, 25-22 road win.
A pair of seniors jump started the Bearcat offense as setter Laira Akin recorded 29 assists and 6 digs. Alex Hanna tallied 9 kills and a .273 hitting percentage in the win.
In the second set Missouri Southern rallied from an 18-7 deficit, scoring the next 15 of 17 points, to take the lead 22-20, but the Bearcats would score the final five points to take the set.
In the final set Northwest rallied from a 12-15 deficit, scoring four of the final five points to over-take the Lions and a 3-0 win.
Freshman Abby Graves led Northwest with 11 kills while Amy Majors added 6 kills and was also outstanding hitting a .364 clip.
Tori Beckman led the defense in digs recording 14 on the night and ending the season with 571 digs.
In all, two seniors played their final game for the Bearcats Saturday. Outside hitter Alex Hanna finished her Northwest career with 1,231 kills; the ninth best record in program history. Hannah also finishes her career with 3,573 attacks, a mark which places her fifth in program history. Setter Laira Akin finished her Bearcat career with 3,600 assists; the third best record in program history.
Northwest finished the 2011 season with a 14-17 record and a 8-10 mark in MIAA play after winning their final three games. The Bearcats placed fifth in the conference standings.
