Mason leads Bearcats past SBU
BOLIVAR, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball Bearcats continued their winning ways on Friday night taking a 3-1 win from Southwest Baptist in MIAA action at John Q. Hammons Court.
The Bearcats improved to 13-17 on the year and improved to 7-10 in the MIAA winning, 25-23, 16-25, 25-19, and 27-25. Southwest Baptist fell to 11-21 on the year and 4-13 in league play.
Northwest was led by senior setter Laira Akin, who notched her seventeenth double-double of the season, finished with 40 plus assists for the seventeenth time of the year as well.
Tori Beckman would lead the defense recording 18 digs while Abby Graves chipped in 17 digs recpectively.
SBU would battle back to steal the second set, but it would not be enough as the Bearcats would show resolve to finish out the final two sets.
Whitney Mason would knock down four kills to keep Northwest close in the second set before SBU pulled out a, 25-16 win. Mason would finish the night with a career high 19 kills while hitting an impressive .536.
In the final two sets, FHSU made the Bearcats earn the victory, as Northwest proved to be the better team. The Bearcats showed resolve taking a, 25-16 win in the third set before closing out the Southwest Baptist Bearcats, 27-25 in the final set.
Up Next: The Bearcats will conclude the 2011 season Saturday when they travel to Missouri Southern. Northwest rallied to beat the Lions 3-2 on Oct. 22 at Bearcat Arena. Tip-off from Joplin is set for 7 p.m.
