Hanna leads Bearcat rally past Griffons
MARYVILLE, Mo. – Alex Hanna recorded a season high 22 kills leading Northwest Missouri State to an exciting 3-2 comeback win over Missouri Western in MIAA volleyball action Tuesday night at Bearcat Arena.
Northwest improved to 11-15 on the year and 5-8 in league play rallying for a 26-24, 21-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-13 win. The Griffons dropped their third straight falling to 12-14 overall and 5-8 in conference action. The Bearcats will return to the road as they travel to Truman State and Central Missouri over the weekend.
Hanna worked her way to a game high 22 kills as she knocked down 10 kills in the fourth set alone. She helped spark a Bearcat comeback after trailing 14-20 midway through the set. The senior hit a blistering .372 overall in the win.
Defense also played a key in the Bearcat comeback as Amy Majors and Brooke Bartosh recorded six and four blocks respectively. A trio of Bearcats finished with double figure digs led by Abby Graves with 18 and followed by Tori Beckman at 17. Laira Akin added 13 digs.
After dropping sets two and three by a hot hitting Missouri Western squad, Northwest would finish the set on a 10-4 run. Four Hanna kills sandwich by a Majors kills and a Griffon error forced a Missouri Western timeout. However, the Bearcats would score four of the final five points to build momentum heading into the final set.
The Bearcats would control most of the fifth set, but the Griffons would make one final attempt to comeback. Northwest would withstand the Griffon rally to split the season series after falling in five sets in St. Joseph last month.
Akin recorded her 14th double-double of the year adding 56 assists and 13 digs. Her 56 assists were two shy of a season high at Pittsburg State.
