Bearcat volleyball heads to Pittsburg State

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team returns to action Wednesday night when they travel to Pittsburg, Kansas to take on the Pittsburg State Gorillas.

Northwest (8-11, 2-4 MIAA) matches up against the Pittsburg State Gorillas (7-15, 4-5 MIAA) at 7 p.m. for the Gorilla’s Breast Cancer Night.  The Bearcats are coming off of being blanked 3-0 by conference powerhouse the Central Missouri Jennies.

In Northwest’s 3-0 loss to the Jennies, Laira Akin had a great game for Northwest accounting for 33 of the Bearcats' 37 assists in the match.  Akin added 10 digs recording her tenth double-double of the season.  Abby Graves had a team-high 13 kills and earned her fifth double-double of the season contributing 10 digs.  Tori Beckman chipped in 16 digs for Northwest in the loss while Amy Majors contributed 7 kills and 2 blocks for the Bearcats.

The Gorillas are coming off sweeping Southwest Baptist 3-0 last Friday.  In the match the Gorillas hit .336, a season high.  The second set was especially strong with the Gorillas pounding down 16 kills in 30 attempts with only two errors.  The team had only six errors in the whole match.  It also out blocked the SBU Bearcats 11.0 to 2.0. 

Kelley Bugler led the Gorillas with 11 kills.  She hit .500 for the match with 20 attempts and only one error.  She also had three block assists.  

All-time Northwest is 25-24-1 when facing the Gorillas and is 7-210 when playing them in Pittsburg.  The Gorillas were tabbed to place fifth in the 2011 preseason coaches' poll, one spot ahead of the Bearcats.  Last season the Bearcats swept the Gorillas.

Up Next:  The Bearcats will host two MIAA games this weekend at Bearcat arena.  Friday night Northwest will welcome Southwest Baptist with tip-off set for 7 p.m.  The Bearcats will then host Missouri Southern on Saturday night in their homecoming game.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. with admission to Saturday night’s game being free.
