Bearcats host Bulldogs in Blackout game
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Head Coach Jessica Rinehart and the Northwest Missouri State volleyball team are encouraging fans to wear black and help the Bearcats "blackout" Truman State in a pivotal MIAA matchup from Bearcat Arena on Friday at 7 p.m.
Northwest returns home after a tough road loss to MIAA-rival Missouri Western with a record of 1-3 in league play and 7-10 overall. The Bearcats enter the heart of MIAA play in the comfort of Bearcat Arena where they host seven of their next nine matches. Last year Northwest used a home court advantage to the tune of a 6-3 record at home.
A pair of freshmen has paced the Bearcats as Abby Graves and Brooke Bartosh have tallied over 140 kills on the season. Bartosh not only leads Northwest in kills (156), but has also been solid defensively with 45 blocks.
Senior setter Laira Akin has been steady all season running the Bearcat offense and averaging 9.89 assists per set, second most in the MIAA. Akin has been an all-around performer for Rinehart and the Bearcats with 159 digs, second-most behind Tori Beckman.
On the defensive side of the net, sophomore Amy Majors has been a mainstay as well, leading Northwest with 81 blocks. She ranks third in league play with 1.13 blocks per set.
First serve from Bearcat Arena is set for 7 p.m. as the Bearcats look to "blackout" the Bulldogs.
