Bearcat offense rolls in sweep
PITTSBURG, Kan. - Northwest Missouri State volleyball squad picked up a pair of wins on Saturday knocking off St. Edward's and Newman both by identical, 3-1 scores at the Pitt State Regional Challenge.
The Bearcats improved to 7-9 on the year with the sweep and close out tournament play at 3-1. Northwest returns to MIAA play on Tuesday as they travel to take on rival Missouri Western in St. Joseph.
Northwest got outstanding performances from Laira Akin after notching a double-double with a season high 51 assists and 18 digs in the win over St. Edward's.
The Bearcats jumped out to a commanding 2-0 lead taking the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-15. The Hilltoppers would squeak out a victory in the third set, 25-22 before the ‘Cats would fight back for a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
A trio of Bearcats would finish with double figure kills, and Kelsey Larson led all players with 20 kills. Abby Graves and Brooke Bartosh joined in as well finishing with 15 and 16 kills respectively.
Bartosh and Larson again led the Bearcat offense with 10 and 11 kills in the nightcap.
The Bearcats fell in the first set, 25-18, but would quickly rebound pulling out the win, 25-15, 25-19, and 25-21 over the Newman Jets. Akin tallied 34 assists pacing the offense as Larson benefited hitting a hot .611 in the win.
Tori Beckman paced the defense 16 digs while Bartosh continued to be solid in the middle adding seven blocks.
Amy Majors was also solid in both games as the middle blocker added six blocks against St. Edward's and eight in the nightcap.
