Three Bearcats Earn All-MIAA Honors in Volleyball

MARYVILLE, Mo.-The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its all-conference teams on Wednesday and three Bearcats have been honored with all-MIAA selections. Sara Falcone and Paige Spangenberg were second-team picks, while Laira Akin was a third-team selection.

Falcone, a senior middle hitter from Omaha, Neb., earned her second all-MIAA nod. Falcone was third in the league with a 1.04 blocks per set average and was second on the team in kills (289), digs (217) and aces (30). Her .248 hitting percentage was tops on the team. Falcone was a third-team selection last season and earned honorable mention following her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Spangenberg is a senior from Red Oak, Iowa. The Northwest libero was third in the league with a 4.88 digs per set average. Spangenberg is second on the MIAA's all-time career digs list with 2,470 digs. Her 5.07 digs per set average is a Northwest program record. Spangenberg was named MIAA honorable mention last season and two seasons ago.

Akin, a sophomore setter from Blue Springs, Mo., was third in the MIAA with a 9.93 assists per set average. Her 1,063 assists this season accounted for 89 percent of Northwest's season output. Akin was third on the squad in digs (206), blocks (60) and aces (27). She was an honorable mention honoree following last season.

Junior outside hitter Alex Hanna was an MIAA honorable mention choice. Hanna led the Bearcats, and was fourth in the league, averaging 3.17 kills per set. Her 339 kills were the third-most in the conference. Hanna also led the team and was fourth in the MIAA with 36 service aces.

Northwest (15-14) plays it's first-ever NCAA Tournament match at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday as the Bearcats face Washburn (30-2) in Warrensburg, Mo.
