Akin, Bearcats Come Back to Beat Pittsburg State

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Setter Laira Akin went down twice during the match with an injury, but Akin, along with the rest of the Bearcat volleyball team refused to quit Friday night, as Akin recorded a career-high 59 assists to lead Northwest Missouri State to a come-from-behind win over Pittsburg State Friday night in Bearcat Arena. The win marks the first time since 1999 that the Bearcats have swept the season series over the Gorillas.

After getting off to a sluggish start Northwest (12-11, 8-6 MIAA) found themselves losing the first two sets 20-25 and 23-25, respectively. But when Akin went down early in set number three it sparked the Bearcats as Northwest dominated the final three sets, trailing for just five points the rest of the way, winning 25-15, 25-20 and 15-6 to earn the victory.

Akin also added seven digs and three block assists in the match. Alex Hanna led the Bearcat offense with 20 kills, Hanna also chipped in with two total blocks. Amber Ryan had 14 kills and hit a team-high .333, while adding three block assists. Sara Falcone chipped in with nine kills, but had nine digs, a solo block and six block assists as well as a service ace.

Amber Guthrie also had nine kills in the win, four digs, two aces and four total blocks. Paige Spangenberg led the back row with a season-high 31 digs. Spangenberg also moved into fourth-place on the MIAA's career digs list in the match. Spangenberg is now just 27 digs shy of passing Central Missouri's Audrey Jensen for third-place. Tori Beckman added a career-best 19 digs of her own in the win and Rachel Nisi had nine digs.

Northwest overcame nine service errors and five blocking errors in the match as the Bearcats out-hit Pittsburg State (10-16, 3-11 MIAA) .220 to .126. Northwest also committed eight fewer attack errors in the match, Northwest also out-blocked the Gorillas 11-5.

Up next for the Bearcats is a match on Homecoming Saturday as Northwest hosts Southwest Baptist at 5:30 p.m. inside Bearcat Arena.
