Bearcats Upset No. 2 Washburn in Epic Match
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Inside an electric Bearcat Arena, in front of a "Pink Out," the Northwest Missouri State volleyball team stunned No. 2 Washburn in an epic 3-2 victory. It was the Bearcats' first win over Washburn since 2006 and their first win over a ranked opponent since knocking off 18th-ranked Nebraska-Omaha 3-1 in 2007.
Northwest (10-9, 6-5 MIAA) jumped out to a fast start in set one and held on for a 25-23 victory. The Lady Blues responded in the second set, winning 25-21. After Washburn (21-2, 9-2 MIAA) looked to have control in the third set, Northwest refused to go away and scored the final six points of the third set to win 25-20 and take a 2-1 lead. The second-ranked Lady Blues tied-up the match after taking the fourth set 25-17. The fifth set went back-and-forth as neither team would go away quietly.
Northwest had the first opportunity to put Washburn away after a Sara Falcone kill put the Bearcats up 16-15. Washburn responded with two points in a row to take a 17-16 lead. Northwest would rally to tie the score four separate times only to see Washburn retake the lead and be at match point. Trailing 19-20, Northwest's seniors took control as an Amber Ryan kill would knot the score at 20-20. Falcone followed that up with a kill of her own to give Northwest its second opportunity at match point. This time Amber Guthrie pounded down an attack from Laira Akin for a kill and the upset.
Ryan led four Bearcats in double-figure kills with a season-high 22 kills, one off her career-best. Ryan also led the Bearcats with a .378 attack percentage and six blocks. Ryan also added two assists in the win. Alex Hanna had 15 kills to go along with her four block assists and team-high three service aces.
Falcone and Whitney Mason had 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Mason had three blocks in the match while Falcone had two block assists and two solo blocks and also recorded her seventh double-double of the season by adding a season-high 16 digs. Akin tied a career-high set earlier this season with 55 assists. Akin also registered her sixth double-double and third in a row by adding 11 digs. Akin was also second on the team with two aces.
Paige Spangenberg led the back-row with 25 digs in the match. Tori Beckman added 12 digs and also had an ace and an assist.
Washburn committed a season-high 29 attack errors in the match. The Lady Blues were also out-hit in a match for just the second time this season as the Bearcats hit .232 to Washburn's .218. The Bearcats also overcame a season-high nine serving errors in the match.
Northwest will be on the road this weekend for a pair of matches. The Bearcats will head to Fort Hays State on Friday before heading to 12th-ranked Emporia State on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
