Bearcats Sweep Over Missouri Southern
MARYVILLE, Mo.-The Bearcat volleyball team picked up its fifth sweep of the season and broke a three-game skid as Northwest Missouri State defeated Missouri Southern 25-19, 25-21 and 27-25 to raise its record back to .500.
The Bearcats (9-9, 5-5 MIAA) won a thrilling third set to attain the sweep by getting three straight points off of blocks. Trailing 25-24, Whitney Mason and Amber Ryan got a block to tie the set after a long volley. Sara Falcone and Amber Guthrie then combined on a block to give the Bearcats a 26-25 lead, before Mason and Falcone sealed the victory with a third-straight block.
Alex Hanna led the Bearcat offense with 14 kills in the win. Hanna also recorded an ace and seven digs. Ryan had 11 kills to go with her four total blocks. Falcone hit .391 to lead Northwest and had 10 kills of her own, to go along with a service ace, five digs and four total blocks. Guthrie and Mason each had five kills, and three and two blocks, respectively.
Laira Akin led Northwest in both assists, with 36 and digs, with 11, to record her fifth double-double of the season. Akin also had four kills and a team-high three aces. Paige Spangenberg had 10 digs, while Rachel Nisi recorded six and also had three assists.
For the match, Northwest hit .262 as team and the Lions (13-9, 3-7 MIAA) hit .175 and had three more attack errors than Northwest.
The Bearcats return to the court on Oct. 19 as they host No. 4 Washburn. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start inside Bearcat Arena. It will also be the annual "Pink Out" game at Northwest, to help raise breast cancer awareness. So make sure to come and support your Bearcats and don't forget to wear pink!
