Northwest Battles Eighth-Ranked Central Missouri to Bitter End
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's three-match winning streak was broken on Friday night as the Bearcats fell at home to eighth-ranked Central Missouri in five sets.
The Jennies took control early in the match winning the first two sets 25-23 and 25-14. The Bearcats refused to go down quietly though as they took the next two sets 25-23 and 25-22 to force a deciding fifth set. Central Missouri (17-3, 8-1 MIAA) proved why they are the eighth-ranked team in the land by taking the fifth set and the match with a 15-9 victory.
Sara Falcone led three Bearcats in double figures with 14 kills and also led Northwest with a .306 hitting percentage. Falcone added an assist, six digs, two aces and three total blocks in the loss. Iesha Haskins and Whitney Mason had 12 and 11 kills, respectively for Northwest (8-7, 4-3 MIAA).
Laira Akin recorded 46 assists to lead Northwest. Akin also had four kills, six digs and two aces of her own. Alex Hanna added eight kills and four block assists for the Bearcats who dropped to 1-2 in five-set matches this season.
Paige Spangenberg led the Northwest defense with 28 digs in the match. Spangenberg also had two assists. Rachel Nisi added 10 digs, while Tori Beckman chipped in with seven and had two assists. The Jennies out-hit Northwest in the match .254 to .195 and also committed four fewer attack errors.
The Bearcats return to action next week with three matches. Northwest will travel to Missouri Western on Wednesday and will go to No. 10 Truman on Friday before returning back home for a match on Saturday night against Missouri Southern at 5 p.m. inside Bearcat Arena.
