Akin, Guthrie and Hanna Lead Northwest to Win Over PSU
PITTSBURG, Kan.-Laria Akin, Amber Guthrie and Alex Hanna all set career-highs Friday night for the Bearcats as they came from behind to defeat Pittsburg State in five sets. Set scores went 25-23, 21-25, 20-25, 25-14 and 15-6.
Hanna led three Northwest Missouri State players with a career-best 24 kills in the match while leading the Bearcats with a .320 hitting percentage and added an ace. Guthrie added a career-high of her own with 15 kills and added five digs, four block assists and two assists in Northwest's victory. Akin recorded a career-high 55 assists. Akin also added her second double-double in the last three matches by adding 13 digs.
Sara Falcone tied a season-high with 14 kills and had her third double-double of 2010 with 13 digs in the match. Falcone also led the Northwest defense with seven block assists.
Paige Spangenberg set a season-high with 30 digs to lead the back row. Spangenberg also added an assist against the Gorillas. Rachel Nisi also played well in the back row recording seven digs, four assists and led Northwest with three service aces. Tori Beckman added nine digs of her own.
Northwest hit .222 overall as a team while Pittsburg State hit .124. The Bearcats also had nine total blocks to PSU's five. Northwest also overcame 31 attack errors in the match in the victory. The win is Northwest's first over Pittsburg State since 2004 and second in the last 18 meetings with the Gorillas.
Northwest (6-6, 2-2 MIAA) will head to Bolivar, Mo., on Saturday afternoon to face Southwest Baptist in the battle of the Bearcats beginning at 2 p.m.
