Bearcats Respond on Day Two at SEU Classic
AUSTIN, Texas—The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team responded from its two losses on Friday with two wins on day two at the St. Edward’s Classic Saturday over Dallas Baptist and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Bearcats swept Dallas Baptist in their first match 25-20, 25-21 and 25-19. Amber Guthrie led the Bearcat attack with a season-high 12 kills. Alex Hanna added 11 and Sara Falcone had nine. Falcone also added a solo block and two block assists in the victory.
Setter Laira Akin recorded 38 assists as well as three blocking assists. Paige Spangenberg led Northwest with 17 digs. Andrea Potter led the team with two service aces. Northwest had five aces overall as a team.
Northwest had a .245 hitting percentage in the match as Dallas Baptist hit .136.
The Bearcats defeated Kingsville 25-13, 24-26, 25-21 and 25-13 in their second match of the day. Northwest hit .289 as a team against the Javelinas, while Kingsville hit .152 overall and -.080 and -.029 in sets one and four.
Falcone and Hanna each had 14 kills to lead Northwest. Falcone also hit a season-high .480 and added three block assists and 11 digs, giving Falcone her second double-double of the season. Akin led the Bearcats with 48 assists in the match to go along with three blocking assists.
Spangenberg added 17 digs to lead the back row, Andrea Potter added seven. Akin, Falcone, Hanna and Potter each had two service aces a piece in the win. Guthrie added another ace in the match while Whitney Mason added nine kills.
Spangenberg was named to the All-Classic Team. Spangenberg collected a total of 65 digs over the weekend averaging 4.64 digs per set.
Northwest (4-4) begins MIAA play next week with three games. Northwest will travel to No. 4 Washburn on Tuesday and will host Fort Hays State and No. 13 Emporia State on Friday and Saturday, respectively in Northwest’s 2010 home opening weekend.
