Bearcats Drop Two in Texas
AUSTIN, Texas-The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team dropped two matches to open the St. Edward's Volleyball Classic Friday afternoon. The Bearcats fell to Abilene Christian and St. Edwards on the day.
The Bearcats were defeated by ACU 15-25, 28-26, 19-25 and 21-25. Freshman Whitney Mason had back-to-back kills to end the match for Northwest in set two after the teams were tied at 26 all. Mason had five kills total against the Wildcats and hit .308.
Alex Hanna recorded a team-high 13 kills in the loss while Sara Falcone had 12 and was a dig shy of getting her second double-double of the season. Laira Akin had 36 of Northwest's 39 assists. Akin also added three kills, two aces, four block assists and four digs. Paige Spangenberg led the Bearcats with 15 digs. Amber Ryan was second, adding nine.
Northwest hit .141 in the match while ACU hit .311 as a team. The Bearcats also had 23 attack errors and nine service errors against the Wildcats.
Northwest fell to host-St. Edwards in its second match of day one. Set scores went 20-25, 18-25 and 14-25.
Hanna again led the Bearcats in kills with eight. Mason added seven and hit .357 to lead Northwest. Mason and Falcone each led the team with two block assists, and Falcone had a team-high two service aces.
Akin led the team with 23 assists and recorded an ace. Spangenberg led the back row with 15 digs. St. Edwards hit a blistering .402 in the match and had just nine attack errors.
Northwest (2-4) will finish the tournament on Saturday when they face Dallas Baptist at 10 a.m. and will conclude with Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2 p.m.
