Bearcats Split Both Days at UNO Showcase

Omaha, Neb.—The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team opened its 2010 season with a split on both days at the Nebraska-Omaha Volleyball Showcase.

Game one, Adams State: Northwest jumped out to an early lead against Adams State winning set one 25-15. After dropping the second set 22-25, the Bearcats won the third 25-21 before losing sets four and five 23-25 and 12-15, respectively. Due to technical and staffing difficulties full stats for this match are unavailable at this time.

Game two, Midwestern State | Box Score The Bearcats responded after the tough defeat to Adams Sate by sweeping Midwestern State by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-22. Sara Falcone led the Bearcat attack with 14 kills in the match. Falcone also added five block assists and eight digs.

Setter Laira Akin led Northwest with 32 assists. Paige Spangenberg led the back row with 13 digs. Alex Hanna and Iesha Haskins had 12 and 10 kills respectively. The Bearcats hit .263 as a team in the match while Midwestern State hit .210. Northwest also had eight blocks overall compared to the Mustangs’ five.

Game three, Newman | Box Score In the first game of day two the Bearcats defeated Newman 3-1. Set scores went 25-22, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-17. Hanna had a career-high 20 kills in the win while hitting .439. Falcone and Amber Ryan each added 10 kills apiece and Falcone added six block assists.

Spangenberg led the Northwest defense with 16 digs and had four service aces, while Andrea Potter had 12 digs. Akin once again led the Bearcats with 36 assists and had two aces. Northwest as a team had eight service aces while the Jets had two.

Game four, No. 9 Minnesota-Duluth | Box Score The Bearcats ended the tournament dropping a 3-1 decision to ninth-ranked Minnesota-Duluth. Hanna once again led the way with 12 kills and had two solo blocks, while Falcone added 11 kills to go along with five service aces, Akin had 35 of Northwest’s 44 assists in the match to go along with her eight digs.

Spangenberg again led the back row with 11 digs and Potter added nine of her own. For the match the Bearcats hit .158 as a team while UMD hit .311 and had four players with double-digit kills.

Northwest (2-2) will travel to Austin, Texas next weekend for the St. Edward’s Tournament.
