Bearcats Close Out 2009 With Sweep Over Missouri Southern
JOPLIN, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team finished up the 2009 season with a three set sweep over Missouri Southern Saturday night in Joplin. Showing no hangover from their upset win the night before over No. 19 Truman the Bearcats won, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-16.
Laira Akin once again led Northwest in assists, recording 37 in the sweep. Akin also had four digs and four total blocks. Junior Sara Falcone led the Bearcats with 12 kills in the match. Falcone, who hit .417 also added seven digs and three total blocks. Ashley Mitchell was second on the team with 11 kills, to go along with two block assists. Alex Hanna and Amber Ryan each chipped in with eight kills.
Northwest hit .330 as a team, their third highest hitting percentage of the season, and best since the opening weekend of the year. The Bearcats had only 14 attacking errors in the match, while forcing Missouri Southern into 19, while hitting only .150. In fact, the only thing that kept Southern in the match was seven service errors by the Bearcats.
Paige Spangenberg, one night after setting the school's career digs record, led the team with 10 digs. Freshman Alicia Watson added five. Kelsey Larson and Andrea Potter each had one service ace in the victory.
Northwest finishes the season 15-21 and 6-14 in the MIAA.
