Spangenberg Breaks Career Digs Record in Upset Over No. 19 Truman
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Libero Paige Spangenberg broke Jill Quast's program career digs record in Northwest Missouri State's 3-1 upset win over No. 19 Truman. Spangenberg, who needed just 12 digs to break Quast's record coming into the match, recorded 25 digs, giving her 1,938 for her career. Spangenberg breaks the record while playing in 144 fewer sets than Quast did. For her career Spangenberg has averaged 5.14 digs per set over her time at Northwest.
Northwest dropped a tough first set, 24-26 before rallying to sweep the next three, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-17. The victory gives the Bearcats their first victory over a ranked opponent this season, and first since Sept. 19, 2007, when Northwest defeated 14th-ranked Nebraska-Omaha 3-1.
Laira Akin finished just one dig shy of her fourth consecutive double-double in the win. Akin led Northwest with 37 assists, and also had three total blocks and two aces. Alex Hanna led three Bearcats with double-digit kills with 14. Sara Falcone had a tremendous performance in the match, recording 12 kills while hitting .323 to go along with a career high 10 total blocks, four of which were solo, also a career high. Amber Ryan chipped in with 10 kills. Andrea Potter finished with eight digs, while also adding two service aces.
Northwest's defensive performance was outstanding, holding Truman to just a .077 hitting percentage and 38 attacking errors. The Bearcats also out-blocked the Bulldogs 12 to five, and hit .177 while committing 20 attack errors.
Northwest (14-21, 5-14 MIAA) will play their season finale in Joplin, Mo., Saturday night as the Bearcats face Missouri Southern at 5 p.m. Northwest defeated Missouri Southern when the two first met back on Oct. 17, 3-2 in Maryville.
