Bearcats Play Home Finale Friday Night
MARYVILLE, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team will play its final home game of the season tonight against No. 19 Truman in Bearcat Arena.
Northwest is 5-8 at home this season, and is coming off of a five-set loss at Missouri Western on Nov. 11. Laira Akin recorded a career-high 51 assists against Missouri Western. Sara Falcone and Alex Hanna each recorded 16 kills in the loss. Akin has recorded three straight games with double-doubles, averaging just over 11 digs per match and nearly 40 assists in those three matches.
Megan Sharpe currently leads the Bulldogs with 362 kills so far this season. Northwest will need to contain her if they want to come away with a victory, and so far this season the Bearcats are averaging just under two blocks per set, while Northwest opponents average 1.5 blocks per set.
Junior libero Paige Spangenberg needs just 12 more digs to pass Jill Quast for the program record for career digs. Quast has a record 1,924 career digs. Spangenberg should easily pass that mark tonight, so far this season Spangenberg is averaging 19.6 digs per match.
Northwest (13-21, 4-14 MIAA) will play the regular season finale Saturday in Joplin, Mo., as the Bearcats travel to take on Missouri Southern at 5 p.m. Northwest defeated Missouri Southern on Oct. 17, 3-2 in Maryville. Kelsey Larson led the Bearcats with 16 kills in the win, while Hanna had 15 and Ashley Mitchell added 12. Akin recorded 48 assists in the first meeting with the Lions.
