Akin Records Career-High 51 Assists in Loss
ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Laira Akin recorded a career-high 51 assists and her third straight double-double with 10 digs, but it was not enough as Missouri Western defeated Northwest Missouri State 3-2 for the second time this season. Set scores went, 27-25, 19-25, 25-23, 22-25 and 6-15.
Sara Falcone had 16 kills to tie for the team high in the loss, Falcone hit .324 and also added 14 digs and a block assist. Alex Hanna also had 16 kills to go along with eight digs of her own. Ashley Mitchell added 12 kills to go along with four block assists. Amber Ryan chipped in with eight kills and a season-high eight block assists.
Libero Paige Spangenberg added 26 digs in the match to lead the Bearcats, moving her ever closer to the school's career digs record. Spangenberg is now just 11 digs away from the record. Sophomore Andrea Potter had 12 digs in the match. Freshmen Alicia Watson and Kelsey Larson both had a service ace.
Missouri Western out-hit the Bearcats .182 to .138 and committed four fewer attacking errors. Northwest out-blocked the Griffons nine to five.
Northwest (13-21, 4-14 MIAA) will play their home season finale this Friday in Bearcat Arena at 7 p.m. against No. 19 Truman.
