Bearcats Travel to Missouri Western
MARYVILLE, Mo.-The Bearcat volleyball team will travel down the road to St. Joseph this evening to face Missouri Western in MIAA action at 7 p.m. Northwest Missouri State is coming off of a four-set loss to No. 5 Central Missouri last Friday.
Northwest played very strongly in the loss to Central Missouri, and gave the Mules all they could handle. Setter Laira Akin distributed 45 assists in the match. Kelsey Larson led the team with 12 kills, while Sara Falcone and Amber Ryan each had 11. Libero Paige Spangenberg had a four-set season high of 28 digs in the loss.
On Oct. 14, the Bearcats fell to Missouri Western 2-3 in Maryville in their first meeting of the season. Akin tied a career high in both assists and digs with 50 and 15 respectively in the loss. Falcone added a double-double with her 14 kills and career-best 18 digs. Larson had 13 kills of her own. Northwest out-hit Western in the match .205 to .197 and committed eight fewer attacking errors.
Spangenberg needs 42 more digs to break Jill Quast's program-record for digs in a career. Akin has recorded back to back double-doubles in Northwest's last two matches. Falcone has four double-doubles since the loss to Missouri Western earlier in the season.
Northwest (13-20, 4-13 MIAA) will play its last week of matches of the 2009 season starting with the Griffons.
