Bearcats Push No. 6 Central Missouri to Four Sets in a Loss
MARYVILLE, Mo.-The Northwest Missouri State volleyball squad gave No. 6 Central Missouri all they could handle, but would ultimately fall in four sets, 17-25, 20-25, 25-20 and 22-25 Friday night inside of Bearcat Arena.
Northwest overcame a slow start in the first two sets and led most of the third one to take the win. In the fourth and deciding set it was a back and forth battle, but this time Central Missouri would pull away at the end winning six of the final nine points.
Laira Akin recorded a four-set season high with 45 assists in the match. Akin also recorded her second straight double-double by adding 13 digs. Kelsey Larson led four Bearcats in double-digit kills with 12. Larson also hit .321 and had five digs and a solo block. Amber Ryan added 11 kills. Ryan would hit .500 in the loss and also chip in with three block assists. Sara Falcone recorded another double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Falcone also was second behind Akin with two assists. Alex Hanna chipped in with 10 kills of her own, Hanna also had a solo block and a block assist.
Libero Paige Spangenberg led the back row with 28 digs. While Andrea Potter and Alicia Watson would each add five digs.
Northwest out-hit Central .215 to .208 and both teams had 20 attacking errors. However, the difference in tonight's match was the serving game. Central recorded five aces to Northwest's two, while the Bearcats also committed a season high 11 service errors, to Central's six.
Northwest (13-20, 4-13 MIAA) will be on the road for their next match. The Bearcats will travel to Missouri Western on Nov. 11 looking to avenge last month's five-set loss in Maryville.
